A real stew classic is the pea soup – everyone knows it from other occasions. Whether at the snack bar, in the alpine hut after a long hike or as a field soup with the NVA or the Bundeswehr: peas, vegetables and bacon make this recipe a true classic.

Ingredients for pea soup like in the GDR: you need it
You need: 500 grams of peeled peas, 1 bunch of vegetables, 2 onions, 250 grams of potatoes, 100 grams of bacon, 1 liter of water, 1 bunch of fresh parsley, salt, pepper, some butter, marjoram, some mustard, 4 pairs of Vienna sausages

This is how it works: Cut the bacon into small cubes. Clean the vegetables from the soup vegetables (carrots, celery and leeks) and cut into small cubes. Peel the potatoes, rinse off any dirt and also cut into small cubes. Peel and finely chop the onions.
Melt the butter in a saucepan and fry or omit the bacon. Add the diced onions and sauté a bit. Then add the vegetables and saute until slightly coloured. Deglaze with the sauce, bring to the boil.

Now add the peas and cook for about ten minutes. Then add the potatoes and let everything cook until the peas and potatoes are cooked. Season with enough salt, pepper, one to two teaspoons of marjoram and mustard to taste.

Turn off the heat and let the soup simmer for about ten minutes. Meanwhile, cut the sausages into small pieces and add them to the soup. Allow to warm. Finally, wash the parsley, shake dry and chop finely. Stir into the soup and serve. A delicious slice of bread goes well with it. Tasty meal!
