How to make Potato and Meat Pie. Easy and quick recipe
1- Start by preparing all the vegetables. Peel and grate the carrots, and finely chop the onions and green peppers.
2- Also grate the tomatoes, although for this recipe you can safely use canned tomatoes without affecting the result.
3- Put a good splash of olive oil and the minced meat in a frying pan. In my case I used mixed pork and beef, but you can use whatever you like: pork, beef, chicken or even turkey. Season to taste and cook over high heat to brown (change between 7 and 8 in your kitchen).
4- When you see that the meat is brown and starting to dry out, it’s time to add the chopped vegetables. Lower the heat a little and stir occasionally so that everything cooks evenly and, when the vegetables have lost volume, take the opportunity to add a little salt.
5-When you see that the onion is already transparent (about 10 minutes) it is time to add the grated tomato and cook everything until almost all the water evaporates.
6- In another 10 minutes you will be done with the filling of your potato pie.
7- Now it is the turn of the potatoes, which you previously cooked between 45 minutes and an hour in unsalted water. You have to peel them hot, being very careful not to burn yourself, as this is the best way for the skin to come off.
8- With a potato masher or fork you make a rough puree, to which you will add salt, black pepper, grated nutmeg and butter. If the potato is warm, the whole process will be much easier for you. Once the puree is seasoned, stir it well with a fork until well dissolved.
9- When you already have the puree to your liking, add the grated cheese. I used emmentaler, but you can use whatever you like the most or have on hand. If you see that it does not integrate well, heat the mixture in the microwave for one minute.
10- Now assemble the cake in a frying pan, preferably an iron one to be able to bake it. First, you need to make the base with a layer of mashed potato.
11- Now put the meat filling, spread it evenly.
12- And now cover the cake with a new layer of puree.
13- If you want, you can decorate the surface with some waves made with the fork. So it will have a crunchy texture.
14- Finally, bake the cake at 220º for 15 minutes, with heat above and below and without air. Leave the oven to rest for a few minutes and enjoy this delicious recipe with your family.
My tips for preparing this recipe:
-Try making the mashed potatoes with the residual heat from cooking in the potatoes themselves, this way it will be much easier for you to peel and shred them and integrate the seasonings.
-Use the meat you like the most, depending on whether you prioritize the intensity of flavor, the amount of fat, or juiciness. In my case, I used a mixture of beef and pork, but you can use anything you consider.
-Don’t be afraid to use canned tomatoes for this recipe, if you don’t have natural tomatoes or are in a hurry, this is a great solution.
